Curleys Supermarket
Energy Efficiency Solution: Thermosave Heat Recovery from Refrigeration System
- Business Problem
-
Curleys supermarket is Northern Ireland’s largest independent supermarket retailer.
The company consists of two supermarkets in Belfast and Dungannon, a petrol station
and 13 off licenses throughout the province. In today’s business environment rising
energy costs are a real issue and any business person will tell you that rising
energy costs means less profit! Although Curley’s existing refrigeration system
was operating within its design parameters, all of the heat generated by the system
was simply 'dumped' in to the atmosphere.
- Solution
-
The solution was to install the ThermoSave Heat Recovery System. This system offers
an engineered solution that uses the waste heat from the Refrigeration system, converts
it into hot water through a heat exchanger, which in turn provides space heating
and domestic hot water. Conventional heat recovery systems typically recover between
30 and 40% of waste heat from the refrigeration plant however; the Thermo Save System
collects virtually 100% of all waste heat making real savings.

"We are committed to the efficient use of resources by reducing the amount of energy
we use. Supermarket requires," said Stephen Kennedy, Director.
"We are continually looking at ways to reduce the amount of energy, along with this
highly effective measure of Heat Recovery we have also taken a number of simple
solutions such as using energy saving bulbs, installing timers and switches that
use motion detectors and using night blinds for the freezer units. For years now
we have had clothes and bottle banks and we do recycle not only our own cardboard
and plastic packaging but also used carrier bags that are returned to us. We have
always felt a corporate responsibility and we look forward to working closely with
Energia to reduce our energy usage as much as is possible" said Stephen.
