UCD Students set sail for Yachting World Cup
UCD Team Ireland are setting sail for the Student Yachting World Cup in La Rochelle, France buoyed by a sponsorship deal with leading independent renewable energy provider Energia.
Energia Renewables are lending their support to the team of 7 UCD students who are representing Ireland at next week’s Student Yachting World Cup. The competition runs from Wednesday 15th – Wednesday 22nd October in La Rochelle on France’s north-west coast. The regatta will see over 150 competitors, representing 15 countries from all around the world compete for the biggest prize in the world of university yachting.
UCD-Team Ireland won the regatta when it was previously held in La Rochelle in 2012. Since early summer the team has been training on Dublin bay in a J80 sailing boat identical to the boats being used for this year’s championships. The team is also working closely with UCD Sport with logistics and preparation both on and off the water, as well as the Irish Universities Sailing Association.
Denis McCarthy, UCD’s Key Account Manager at Energia said, “Energia is delighted to be powering the efforts of UCD Team Ireland. Hopefully it will be a lucky return to La Rochelle for UCD Team Ireland. As a leading provider of renewable energy on the island of Ireland, we know all about harnessing the power of wind.”
“Energia Renewables is among Ireland's leading providers of sustainable green energy, providing 25% of Ireland’s wind power. It currently has over 380MWs of projects in development and has invested over €200m in windfarms since 2008.”
The Student Yachting World Cup is an event organized every year in France by students for students. Created in 1979, each country is represented by only one team, who represents its university or school too.
