Clever men look after their health

We’ve noticed the Energia lab getting even hairier lately as our lab technicians are growing horseshoes, handlebars and Fu Manchu moustaches for Movember 

As well as knowing great value when they see it, the cleverest men we’ve tested know how important it is to look after their own health. We’ve noticed that Irish men are great at looking after their family and looking out for their mates but aren’t always as good at looking after themselves.

There are some clever ways we can do this:

1. Stop heart disease with diet and exercise:

Heart disease is the number one killer of men in Ireland. More than cancer, more than car accidents. About 10,000 people die in Ireland every year from heart disease or stroke

The good news is you can make a few clever changes to how to you live to reduce your chances of becoming one of them:

BE ACTIVE
The more you move, the healthier your heart gets. There’s no need to join an expensive gym, a brisk walk or jog around a local park for half an hour, five days a week is perfect. Getting out into nature will help reduce stress too!

EAT WELL
Almost half of Irish men are overweight or obese. This is a big problem for our hearts because it has to work much harder to pump blood around our bodies. We know it isn’t easy but try to reduce the amount of high fat and sugar foods from your diet and eat more fruit and vegetables. In time you will look and feel much better. If you are struggling to get started or stay on the healthy eating wagon, join a group, some offer men only meetings or food options that may be similar to what you love to eat

REDUCE STRESS
Can’t get to sleep? Waking early? Flying off the handle more than you would usually? Feeling forgetful?  You may be stressed – another cause of heart attack and stroke. The best thing about your brisk walk is it will help stress management too! Try to stay away from caffeine and high fat foods and talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling.

Try to figure out where the stress is coming from;
  • Pressure at work? Can you speak to your manager?
  • Too much pressure outside of work and family? Is there something you could drop?
QUIT SMOKING
If you smoke, you probably know how bad it is for your heart and lungs but quitting is really hard too. You have to battle a physical and psychological addiction. When you succeed you will improve your heart and physical health as well as saving a ton of money, about €3,000 a year! Imagine what you could do with that?! Quit.ie offer an online support plan to help you get off the smokes for good.

2. Cheat cancer with a check-up:

Although it isn’t something we like to think about, we are all at risk of getting cancer at some point in our lives. A lot has changed in the last decade, treatments are much more successful and less aggressive so it is perfectly normal to get treatment and get on with your life. The best way to ensure a great outcome is to catch cancer cells early. The easiest way to do this is by having a check-up with your doctor every year. It’ll only take an hour and might save your life.

3. Mind your mental health:

We all have mental health, some days we feel great, some days we don’t and that’s OK. The important thing is on days you don’t feel good, you do what you need to feel better. That might be:
  • Going for a walk or run
  • Spending time with family or friends
  • Getting a good night’s sleep.
Try an avoid the impulse to sit alone dwelling on how you are feeling. There is strength in numbers, although you may not feel like it initially, doing things with others often helps your mental health. If sport isn’t your thing, how about joining a local Men’s Shed 

One of the best things you can do when you aren’t feeling good is speak to someone, family, a mate or your partner.

If you haven’t been feeling good about life for two weeks or more, make an appointment with your doctor. They will understand and help you find the best solution for you. It’s funny how we wouldn’t think twice about seeing a doctor if we injured ourselves on the football field but avoid it when it is our mental health. Really it’s just a different part of our body that needs some help.

Be clever, look after yourself and start doing what you need to do to feel as good as you can.
