From TRX to Triathlons getting fit has never been more popular in Ireland. It has also never been more important with our obesity rates soaring, we are in line to become the most obese country in Europe
. Unless we take action. Joining a gym is expensive but not the only option. There are lots of things we can do in or around our own home for free which will help us get fit for less.
There are loads of benefits to being fit;

- Relief from anxiety or depression
- Strengthen bones
- Improve your confidence
As with any major lifestyle change, mention it to your doctor before you begin. Once you have their approval why wait? Don’t worry about how fit you are or are not at the moment, the most important thing is to get started!
Home workout with YouTube
This is the easiest option, we don’t even have to leave the comfort of the living room which is brilliant news, as the evenings draw in. YouTube
is a treasure trove of free content for people looking to get fit. Some of the most popular channels to work out at home with are:
Watch carefully before following along and try to mimic the exercises exactly to prevent strain or injury. Live exercise is the best option if you are a beginner or have restricted mobility.
Take a walk
We live in a beautiful country, why not make the most of it by taking a walk around your local area? To make it even easier the Irish Heart Foundation have developed walking routes in every county in the country so you can easily track the kilometres you are walking. Your goal should be to walk five times a week for 30minutes
as this is proven to improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels as well as helping to clear your head. If motivation is a problem, try joining a free walking group
meeting new people and having a fixed date and time to walk might help!

. App stores are filled with cheap and free apps for getting fit. Here are three of our favourites:
Couch to 5k
: turn it on when you go for a walk, it will help you build up to a 5k run using interval training.
My fitness pal
: brilliant for tracking food intake and exercise. Add food manually or scan the barcode to stay within a recommended calorie intake for your height and weight. Add in any exercise you do and track your progress.
: pick the part of your body you would like to work out and chose from a number of pre-set activities.
Try a free class
Keep an eye out for special offers or trial runs at gyms to take a class for free. This is a great option to test out something you may be interested in taking part in at a later date. Popular times for trial runs are January and September.
Train in the park
Many parks in Ireland now contain free to use outdoor fitness equipment. Ask at your nearest park or county council office for details.
