Law and the Idea of Liberty in Ireland
Marking 800 years since the signing of the Magna Carta, the Irish Legal History Society will be celebrating in academic style. The Magna Carta marks the moment that a check was made on tyrannical rule in England, and then across the globe. As a country that practises English Common Law, Ireland was profoundly affected by this piece of legislation and its effects are felt in the legal system up to this very day. This conference will welcome a variety of entertaining and articulate speakers including Patrick Geoghegan, the Daniel O'Connell scholar, James Kelly, and Sean Duffy, all known for being electric speakers on historical subjects. Held on the historical ecclesiastic site of Christ Church Cathedral, historians and history buffs should be sharpening their pencils ahead of some furious note-making.
