Then I will lead the group on a forage, first within the grounds and then extending into surrounding woodlands, hedgerows and anywhere else we can discover hidden treasures. Once you see just how much is to be found, be sure you will have the foraging bug and those primal instincts will kick in! Breda Mayock’s Dresses exhibition opens at The Courtyard Gallery
 http://www.mayo.ie/news/event/breda-mayocks-dresses-exhibition-opens-at-the-courtyard-gallery-museum-of-country-life-turlough/
April 20 - May 22, 2018
A fascinating new exhibition of work by Mayo artist and musician Breda Mayock has just opened in The Courtyard Gallery at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar.
Dresses is a unique collection of 15 works exploring how memory is weaved into the cloth of our everyday lives.
The mixed media exhibition consists mostly of fabric, thread and found objects. Some of the dresses are made by the artist while others are childhood dresses worked on with thread, feather and paint.
One of the larger pieces, called ‘School Dress’, is a giant dress covered in pages from old school books. The pages create a thought-provoking collage of signatures, notes and dates of importance to the people they once belonged to, with some pages dating as far back as 1932.
“The work is a glimpse into memory, mystery and learning, and of how we weave these threads of the past in order to keep our memories alive,” said Ms Mayock.
“It explores devotion and what gets passed down from one generation through to the next. Not unlike a museum collection, this exhibition is a trove of personal and historical importance.”
