I Smelled A Raw Recruit: The World War Films of Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley
http://www.butlergallery.com/mary-reid-kelley-and-patrick-kelley/
Exhibition continues until October 7th
I Smelled A Raw Recruit is a multi-media exhibition centered around the World War Films by New York-based artists Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley. The two artists collaboratively create unique and heavily stylized film works with distinct political overtones. At this exhibition they will screen their most recent film, In The Body of the Sturgeon, which follows a doomed submarine crew on their final journey in the Pacific, along with three earlier films set on the Western Front of World War I. Alongside the video presentations are painted sculptural objects from the sets of the films, along with two lightbox portraits of characters from Sturgeon, which reveal the detailed painted surfaces of both performer and set. Whether set inside a submarine, hospital, or a military brothel, Mary and Pat – as they prefer to be called – create complex and unusual works which mix moral dilemmas with pitch black comedy to explore important questions about the world
