The An Poc Fada
Venue: Annaverna Mountain
The An Poc Fada is a strange and wonderful sport in Irish camogie and hurling which puts the skills of players to the test off of the pitch...and on to the mountains.
In Co Louth, at An Fhána Mór, competitors have to puck a sliothar (a small leather ball used in Gaelic games) to the top of Annaverna Moutain, or, An Céide, with a hurley. Then, they have to race along, all the time knocking the sliothar further and further ahead, until they get to Carn an Mhadaidh. Then, there's a little downhill respite as the players speed ahead to An Ghabhlán before finishing back at An Fhána Mór. The player who finishes the course in the fewest number of pucks wins. xx
The entire course is about 5km, and it is punishing. The players don't take it at a jog - it's a fierce sprint. As ancient gaelic games are played in the ancient mountains where the likes of Setanta, himself fond of his hurley and sliothar once roamed, you feel a sense of history. Watch these players reach out to their distant past through the medium of sport.
