Open University Films re visits 1983 Glencolmcille.
In 1983 The Open University made two films in Glencolmcille, and these were shown annually on BBC and studied by Open University geography students over the
next ten years. The first programme ‘South West Donegal- tradition and change’ opened by saying
‘To understand the distinctive character of a place as it is now, we need to understand the past, the previous layers with which more recent processes have
combined. One way of building up a picture of the recent past is from the recollections of local people.’
The programme does this in terms of recollections of changes since the 1950s. They include interviews with Father McDyer , members of the Fuller family and
local people involved with the Sheep farmers cooperative and the Knitting cooperative. They examine local agriculture and industrial development , the impact of tourism and the future of the Irish language.
Now ,nearly 35 years later, The Open University and the Folk Village are inviting local people( and maybe even some of those filmed in 1983) to join with
Dr Pat Jess who made the programmes in 1983 to view these programmes again as a way of remembering life in 1983 and reflecting on the new layer of changes to the present times.
