The Festival features exciting live in-person arts experiences across theatre, music and visual arts, as well as a wide range of in person conversations in the 2021 edition of First Thought Talks.

The 2020 edition of the festival reached audiences across Ireland and the world through its engaging digital programme. Keen to keep that connection with those who may not be able to attend in person, GIAF 2021 includes an enhanced digital element, which will see a number of live streams and view on demand events. Audiences can choose how they wish to engage – in person or online.

Due to the impact of Covid-19, Galway International Arts Festival has moved from its usual home in July to the later dates of 28 August – 18 September 2021.

Mirror Pavilion, Leaf Work by John Gerrard

Link here - https://www.discoverireland.ie/galway/mirror-pavilion-leaf-work-by-john-gerrard

The Pavilion is a beautiful and striking structure, with
three sides and the roof clad in a highly reflective mirror and the fourth wall a high–resolution LED wall. Located in Derrigimlagh Bog in Connemara, Leaf Work is a lone melancholic virtual character on the LED screen, clad in oak leaves. The work is a response to the escalating climate crisis while also reflecting the landscape of its spectacular location.

Derrigimlagh Bog was the site of transmission of the first transatlantic radio signal from the Marconi station in 1907 and the site of Alcock and Brown’s first transatlantic plane crossing in 1919. The unveiling of Mirror Pavilion will be a dazzling moment on the Irish landscape.

This installation is accessible by foot via a marked walking loop. Please allow approximately 25 minutes to walk from the car park to the installation.

All the artists have graduated from the School of Art at Ulster University, winning several awards and prizes along the way. The ArtisAnn Gallery believes in offering encouragement to young and emerging artists and is confident that these are stars of the future.  The artwork produced by these newcomers is remarkable both for its technical ability and breadth of new ideas.  This is a very varied show, with two common linkages:  all are recent graduates and all are of the highest quality, with every indication that they will be ‘names’ of the future.
