Nintendo to release its new 'NX' console in March 2017

Nintendo has announced that it will release its next console - the 'NX' - in March 2017.

The company revealed the news in its latest financial report, stating "for our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed ‘NX’ with a brand-new concept. NX will be launched in March 2017 globally".

The company also revealed that its highly-anticipated next Legend of Zeldagame has been delayed until next year - but confirmed that it will now launch simultaneously on the NX and its current console the WiiU.It echoes the release of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which was launched on both the GameCube and Wii in 2006.

While the company has been open about the existence of the NX for more than a year now, it has released very few details about the new console. Reports have suggested that the console could be some form of hybrid home & handheld device.

Nintendo says the new Zelda will be its focus at the E3 trade show in June, and that the NX will not be properly unveiled until a later date.

Ahead of the new console's launch, the company is releasing two new Pokemongames for the 3DS handheld later this year. It also says it will expand its successful amiibo range of figures and cards - which sold 24.70 million units and approximately 28.90 million units respectively in the last fiscal year.

Nintendo has also announced that its next smartphone games will be Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem titles - two of the developer's existing properties.

The company's first smartphone title Miitomo is said to have had 10 million users since its release last month.
