Huntstown Power Plant

In 1997, Ireland’s demand for electrical energy was growing rapidly. The Viridian Group responded by forming Huntstown Power Company the first truly Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Ireland.

The design of the Huntstown Power Plant allowed for flexible operation while maintaining the highest levels of energy conversion, burning natural gas with distillate oil as a backup fuel source.

Phase 1

The Phase 1 power module started commercial operation in November 2002 on time and budget and is among the most efficient and technically advanced plants in the Irish electricity system, playing a key role in meeting Ireland's Kyoto commitments.

Phase 2

The Phase 2 power module was completed in autumn 2007 and in total the combined output of Huntstown can provide up to 20% of the total electricity fed into the national grid system.
