Applegreen goes 'green' in €3m deal

May 30

Leading Irish forecourt retailer Applegreen is switching to competitive energy provider Energia in a major new €2m “green” energy deal.

The contract will see Energia supplying Applegreen’s network of over 70 forecourt locations around Ireland, including their operations at the M4 & M1  Motorway Service Areas.

Responding to the massive increase in demand from Irish businesses for “green” power, Energia is set to grow its renewable energy portfolio by over 268 megawatts (MWs) this year. The vast majority of this, 243 MW, will come from 26 new Irish wind farms that will become operational during 2011.

Included in the terms of the deal will be the use of Energia’s new online multi-site energy management tool. This will mean Applegreen will be able to keep track of their energy consumption and expenditure over a number of locations at the click of a mouse.

Commenting on the deal, Trevor Moore, Head of Operations, Applegreen, commented: “Applegreen has an ongoing commitment to improving the Company’s energy efficiencies by embracing green technologies and improving energy awareness amongst employees.  In recent years we have invested in several initiatives, including re-cycling water in our carwashes and being the first forecourt retailer in Ireland to install energy efficient forecourt canopy LED lighting.  Our Mount Merrion site proudly won an Envirocom award in 2010 for its commitment to greener technology.  Therefore, moving our overall electricity requirements towards renewable energy was a natural next step for the Company.”

Ian Mulcahy Business Markets Manager, Energia commented: “Energia has seen the number of ‘green’ energy deals increase significantly recently. In response, we will grow our renewable power portofolio by 268 megawatts (MW) this year alone. We are already one of the top suppliers of “green” power to businesses in Ireland. We have 300MWs of operational capacity at the moment and will be increasing this by another 540MWs over this year and next”

“As well as offering Irish businesses some of the most competitive electricity and gas packages, we also provided unrivalled levels of service. Together with our competitively priced energy offerings, this has helped us grow a 28% market share of the business electricity and gas market.”

Energia is Ireland’s leading independent energy supply company with a 28% market share of the business electricity and gas market on an all–island basis with over 65,000 customers. The company also supplies 30% of all gas consumed in Ireland by the country’s business gas users.  In addition to renewable assets, the company also operates a 750MW gas fired power station in north Dublin.
