Energia target renewable 840MW

April 26

Competitive energy provider Energia has announced that it is on course to supply over 840MW of renewable power, or 25% of Ireland’s renewable energy market, to Irish business by 2012.

Having commenced operations at the Drumlough Hill wind farm extension in October last, Energia have announced that they will commence generation from their new facilities at Corkermore, Donegal and Caherdowney, Co Cork in July and October 2011 respectively.

Peter Baillie, Managing Director Energia Renewables, commented, ““Energia is on course to supply over 840MW of Ireland’s renewable power, or around 25% of the Irish renewable market, by 2012.”

“We currently have over 300MW of operational wind farms, and a further 540MW in development. Of this, 174MW is directly-owned renewable generating assets either fully on-grid or coming on stream on an all-island basis.”

“We are firmly focused on expanding our renewables business. Last year we signed a preliminary off-take agreement to purchase the electricity generated from the pioneering Wave Energy Coverter being operated by US firm Ocean Energy Systems (OES) off Belmullet, Co Mayo. We are also in negotiations to sign up almost 210MW of renewable energy produced from a number of other innovative renewable projects including biomass and waste-to-energy.”

“Energia is proud to be one of the most significant contributors to the achievement of Ireland’s renewable targets. We are the largest independent provider of power on the island with market share in both wind energy and gas and one of the largest investors in the renewable sector. Today our two power stations in Huntstown and our operational windfarms provide up to 11% of the power for Ireland.”

“Our investments in developing renewable capacity are also giving a significant boost to many localities around Ireland in terms of jobs in the surrounding areas, infrastructure improvements and increased rates for local authorities.”

“We have also successfully completed a number of financing rounds for new facilities, including securing over €115m in funding, which will fund over 100MW of this renewable asset development.”

Energia has a 28% market share of the Irish business electricity and gas market supplying the energy needs of over 65,000 business customers.
