Energia teach VECs €4.5M lesson

Leading independent energy provider Energia has come top of the class and won a significant new dual-fuel energy supply contract to provide 33 City and County VECs around Ireland with gas and renewable electricity.

Under the terms of the tender win, Energia will now supply gas and renewable electricity to the primary, secondary and adult colleges run by 33 VECs around Ireland. Energia will be supplying a total of 28 Gigawatts of “green” electricity and 18 Gigawatt hours of gas each year. The VECs included are in Cavan, Carlow, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Limerick, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.

Through the use of renewable electricity, the VECs will make a saving of 14,500 tonnes of CO2 each year. Alan Mulcahy, Business Markets Manager, Energia commented: “We’re delighted to win this major tender to supply the Vocational Educational College organisations with gas and renewable electricity. We already supply a massive number of large and small customers in both the public and private sectors with energy deals and expertise.”

Energia has a 28% market share of the business electricity and gas market on an all–island basis with over 65,000 customers.   The company also supplies 20% of all gas consumed in Ireland by the country’s business gas users.

The company is a leading all-island player in the provision of renewable power.  Energia also supplies conventionally generated electricity from two major gas fired generating stations in Dublin
