June 14

The announcement coincides with Global Wind Day that takes place annually on June 15th and is being marked in Ireland through a series of events across the country including ‘Walk and Talk’ open days at numerous wind farms across Ireland.

Global Wind day is supported by the UN and by the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The overall winnerof the main sponsor's prize was Paul Whelan whos picture highlights the need to create a sustainable future in order to protect the wellbeing of future generations and was taken at Tournafulla wind farm, Co.Limerick
Paul said "What we do today matters more tomorrow. Innovation, investment and inspiration for new energy will be thanked by future generations this will be my legacy. Reaching out to the next generations and providing the most natural of resources create the sustainable future which our youth deserve."

The runners up were Keith Arkins and Philomena Kenealy.

Keith's image was taken as part of a photo essay and he described the process. "In the last hour of a two day shoot as I was standing on the edge of the hillside the clouds parted and the sun began to light certain areas of the countryside. My goal had been to create images where the wind turbines complemented their locations and felt I got it in this shot more than any other."

Philomena Kenealy's entry, taken by photographer Ross Harding, captures the economic and societal benefits wind energy delivers for Ireland’s next generation with her picture of Engineer JulieBrett sitting upright atop a wind turbine with a 44 metre hub height in Raheem Barr Windfarm, Castlebar Co.
