The UCD sailing club team won four of the five races during the qualifying competition which took place on Easter Monday in Howth. They will now go forward to represent Ireland at this year’s Student Yachting World Cup in France later this year. The regatta will see over 150 competitors, representing 15 countries from all around the world compete for the biggest prize in the world of university yachting. UCD-Team Ireland won the regatta when it was held in La Rochelle in 2012. The team will be working closely with UCD Sport with logistics and preparation both on and off the water, as well as the Irish Universities Sailing Association.

Tara Flood, PRO, UCD Sailing Club commented, “Congrats to the team on such a great win for UCD Sailing Club! Tough wind conditions and close competition from all other colleges made fantastic racing in Howth. Many thanks to DIT Sailing Club and DCU for hosting! Student Yachting World Cup 2015 here we come!!”

Shane Canavan, UCD’s Key Account Manager at Energia said, “Energia is delighted to power the efforts of UCD Team Ireland. The team is to be congratulated again for winning the qualifiers and everyone at Energia wants to wish them the best of luck during their preparations over the coming months. As a leading provider of renewable energy on the island of Ireland, we know all about harnessing the power of wind.”

“Energia Renewables is among Ireland's leading providers of sustainable green energy, providing 25% of Ireland’s wind power to homes and businesses across Ireland. Energia currently supplies over 680MWs of renewable energy and this will rise to over 1,000MWs by the middle of this decade. Energia has invested over €250m in wind farms since 2008 and currently has over 300MWs of projects in development.”

The Student Yachting World Cup is an event organized every year in France by students for students. Created in 1979, each country is represented by only one team, who represents its university or school too.
