Energia Renewables have continued their support this year for UCD Sailing Club and are wishing UCD Team Ireland the best of luck in this year’s competition. The competition runs for a week from Tuesday 13th – 20th October in La Baule – La Pouliguen on the north end of the Bay of Biscay on the France coast. This year’s regatta is expecting 150 competitors from up to 20 teams. The teams from around the world compete for the biggest prize in the world of university yachting.

The UCD team includes Emma Reidy from Dun Laoghaire who sails with the Irish National Sailing School, Colin O’Mahony from Dun Laoghaire who sails with Blessington Sailing Club, Cian Cahill from Dun Laoghaire, Ryan Glynn from Bangor, Co. Down who sails with Ballyholme Yacht Club and Cliodhna Connolly from Cork who sails with Baltimore Sailing Club.

In 2012 UCD-Team Ireland won the regatta when it was previously held in La Rochelle. Since early summer the team has been training on Dublin bay in a J80 sailing boat identical to the boats being used for this year’s championships. The team is also working closely with UCD Sport with logistics and preparation both on and off the water, as well as the Irish Universities Sailing Association.

Denis McCarthy, UCD’s Key Account Manager at Energia said, “Once again we are delighted to support UCD’s Sailing Club as they head to France to compete in the Student Yachting World Cup. As the leading provider of sustainable green power, we are hoping Team Ireland will make the most of the wind in France and bring home gold for Ireland.”

“Energia Renewables provides 25% of Ireland’s wind power. It currently has over 300MWs of projects in development and has invested over €300m in windfarms since 2008.”

The Student Yachting World Cup is an event organized every year in France by students for students. Created in 1979, each country is represented by only one team, who represents its university or school too.
