Energia deal cuts costs and carbon footprint for Fitzwilliam Card Club

New lights save 23 tonnes of CO2 annually

Grant funding for projects that reduce running costs by up to 85%

22nd March 2016 – Competitive energy provider Energia has dealt the Fitzwilliam Card Club a winning hand in its efforts to reduce its energy costs and carbon footprint.

After undertaking an extensive audit of the venue, Energia and the Fitzwilliam Card Club put together an energy efficiency plan. This involved replacing the venue’s existing light fittings with more efficient LED lights. As a result, the 453 incandescent and fluorescent lights in the venue were replaced by 141 LED energy efficient fittings.

The Fitzwilliam has reduced its energy usage by 51 megawatt hours each year, lowering its carbon footprint by over 23 tonnes this year alone. Just as importantly, the upgrade work has resulted in an annual saving of around €7,000 on their energy bills.

This work was carried out under Energia’s “Cash for Kilowatts” scheme that provides grant funding to companies for energy efficiency projects. It means that any company carrying out an energy efficiency project can qualify for grant funding of up to 30% of the project value. The new scheme is open to all businesses, whether or not they are customers of Energia.

As well as benefitting from the generous grants, businesses will also make very significant ongoing savings through the energy efficiency projects. For example:

  • Lighting: LED and high efficiency lighting can typically reduce your lighting costs by up to 75%

  • Heating: a new boiler or heating controls can save over 25% of your annual fuel costs

  • Refrigeration: new systems can reduce your costs by up to 30%

David Hickson, Managing Director, Fitzwilliam Card Club commented, “We are really pleased with the support that we are receiving from Energia as it is significantly reducing our energy usage. It  benefits the environment through a big CO2 saving and significantly reduces our energy costs – we’ve already noticed the savings. As we operate mainly at night time, lighting is key to the customer experience and ambience of the venue.  The upgrade work was very smooth and had no impact on our operations.”

Kevin O’Kane, Energy Services Engineer, Energia commented, “Our ‘Cash for Kilowatts’ scheme is an important new initiative to promote energy efficiency upgrades among Irish businesses.”
“Energia is offering companies a double incentive. They benefit from the reduction in their ongoing energy costs by installing new efficient systems in areas such as lighting and heating. Reductions of 75% and 30% in lighting and heating bills respectively are possible. But we’re also offering grant funding for up to 30% of the project cost to a business upon its completion”

“Through the scheme we’re delighted to be supporting the national upgrade programme ‘Better Energy’ and the National Climate Change Strategy. Businesses can find out more by contacting Energia. Full details are available on www.energia.ie/funding or by emailing energyservices@energia.ie.”

“Energia has a long standing commitment to sustainability. This is one of the reasons why we are one of the leading providers of renewable energy to homes and businesses across Ireland. We currently supply over 795MWs of green power and thanks to a number of wind farms currently in development, we will soon increase this to 1,000MWs. Energia Group remains one of the most significant contributors to the achievement of Ireland’s renewable targets and one of the largest investors in the renewable sector.”

Energia has a 23% market share of the Irish business electricity and gas market supplying the energy needs of over 60,000 business customers.

Energia is also powering Irish homes nationwide in the residential electricity and gas market. Energia’s great new dual fuel offer will guarantee consumers savings of up to 15% off standard unit rates.

Energia has offices in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Belfast and Omagh.
