Few recognise the deep connections between the Le Fanu family and the village of Abington in Murroe, County Limerick. In showcasing the Gothic Imagination, we look to both the lives of the Le Fanu family in Abington in the 1800s and to the architectural stylising of the time.

As the most well known of the Limerick Le Fanu family, some of this years festival will focus on the writings of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. We look at his novels and stories, written in the gothic genre, full of ghostly and mysterious happenings, and on their impact to this day.

From one of J Sheridan Le Fanu’s ballads, we introduce a musical performance of an almost forgotten piece which was set to music by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford.

A glimpse into the cultural, political and social aspects of living in Abington at that time, paint a picture of how the Le Fanu’s experienced life while living and working in this County Limerick village.
