  1. The Holly King
Saturday 1st December - Sunday 23rd December 2018
Open each Weekend in December from the 1st-23rd. In ancient times it was believed a seasonal battle took place between the Oak King in the Summer and the Holly King in the Winter. Trees were sacred to the Celts as they saw them as a force which took care of life on earth. Their most sacred tree was the Oak known as “Crann Bethadh” the Tree of Life. They called the Oak tree duir/doire which is where we get our word door from, as they were an entry point to great wisdom and knowledge and the first language in Ireland Ogham was a tree alphabet. Fore, the town of the springs, in North Westmeath is an ancient place close to Lough Derravaragh “The Lake of the Oaks” home to the Children of Lir and is an ideal location to visit The Holly King in. A visit to The Holly King this Christmas in his indoor sacred grove at Fore will be an unique natural experience where children will learn about trees, receive as a gift, an Oak Tree sapling, a Candy Cane treat and get to make a Christmas wish. You are free to take your own pictures of the visit. The visit is suitable for children over 4 years and the grove is located below the stone cut Fore Abbey tearooms, which will also be open for refreshments. You can also enjoy a walk around the 13th Century Fore Abbey or take the 3km Fore Abbey Trail where there is an Oak plantation. This Christmas get a gift that will last for 200 years.
