The Growery in Birr, Co. Offaly acts as a third space outside of the home and work to provide social activities around food, health, sustainability and wellbeing. They're partnered with organisations on a local, national and non-national level, and provide a social space for the people of Birr.
They help the community by promoting education around food and the environment, providing a space for relaxation, and helping assist with climate resilience and action. They're putting the finishing touches on their 2019 training programe with teaching slots from environmentalists and food experts from Ireland and further abroad.
The Growery include the community on both an organisational and individual level: they're helping the local girls school plan a permaculture garden, welcome members of the community mental health centre on a weekly basis, and engage in work placements and project consultation.
Not content with just operating in Bitt, they've established another garden in a nearby village, and they've raised funds for a polytunnel to assist in growing flowers for the town's Tidy Towns efforts.
