Iarnród Éireann on track for energy cost savings in €25m Energia deal

February 15

Iarnród Éireann has chosen Energia, Ireland’s leading independent energy firm as its electricity supplier in a major new €25 million three-year deal.

The new deal will see Energia supplying Iarnród Éireann with a massive 186 Gigawatt Hours (GwH) of electricity over the three year period. This electricity will be used to power the DART network, driving the carriages and powering the stations. Energia will also be supplying all of Iarnród Éireann’s depots throughout Ireland with electricity over the next three years.

Commenting on the deal, “Willie Pierce, Manager, Energy & Environment at Iarnród Éireann commented: Iarnród Éireann uses a considerable amount of electricity each year operating the DART network and running an extensive network of stations and depots throughout Ireland. We are conscious of the need to drive down costs and to have a flexible arrangement with a reliable supplier, who can provide first class customer service. Energia won the contract on both counts, following a formal tender process, and we can confidently expect significant savings over the coming three years.”

Gary Ryan, Director, Energia commented: “We’re delighted to have won this major new €25 million electricity supply contract for Iarnród Éireann. Iarnród Éireann is one of the main providers of public transport in Ireland with an extensive network of depots and stations that we’ll be supplying with electricity under the terms of this deal. The DART network is a key piece of infrastructure for the Dublin region and we are happy to be playing a part in transporting millions of Dubliners around the city and county over the coming years.”

“Energia are committed to offering Irish businesses of all sizes in both the public and private sector very competitive offers for both electricity and gas, backed up by unrivalled customer service.”

Energia has a 25% market share of the business electricity market on an all–island basis with over 50,000 customers.   The company also supplies 20% of all gas consumed in Ireland by the country’s business gas users.

The company is a leading all-island player in the provision of renewable power.  Energia also supplies conventionally generated electricity from two major gas fired generating stations in Dublin.

Energia is also one of the most significant contributors to Ireland’s renewable targets. We have consistently been one of the largest investors in the renewable sector. Following initial wind farm investments in 2003, Energia currently have over 220MW of operational windfarms, and a further 400 MW in development.
