Before you cast your vote for the 2019 Get Ireland Growing awards, see first hand what food growing means to communities: from tidy towns, to schools, to cancer support centres to rehabilitation centres, we listened to each of their stories. Some brought a smile, and some tears were shed too, but all were profoundly moving.  


Zero Waste Community Garden, Co. Kildare

The Zero Waste Community Garden is dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables in a sustainable and organic way. They buy all their heritage and organic seeds from Irish Seed Savers, they currently have 13 gardeners with vegetable plots, a heritage orchard, 18 other fruit trees, and grow all year round with their polytunnel. Their project has had a positive impact in their community by helping to reduce their carbon footprint, reduce family expenditure on food, and encourage a healthier lifestyle.

Breffni Men's Garden & Social Club, Co. Leitrim

The Breffni Men's Gardening & Social Club comprises of the centre’s community allotment, poly-tunnel and Hope Orchard. It promotes inclusivity amongst men of all ages & all ethnic, social, cultural & economic backgrounds. For members living in rural areas, attending the group reduces their sense of social isolation, helps to improve members physical & mental health and, for older members, the work also helps improves their motor skills, mobility & flexibility.

The Growery, Co. Offaly

The Growery is a social third space in the context of food health sustainability, regeneration, and wellbeing. They run a variety of partnership projects with local, national, and non-national organizations, while affording the community of Birr a social amenity that promotes education, relaxation, wellbeing, and climate resilience.
