Taking control and cutting costs with easy EV charger installation

Find how how Brian Drysdale and his family made the switch to an electric vehicle while taking control of their energy usage using a smart plan.

EV range anxiety was very much an issue for Brian Drysdale and his family as they considered purchasing an EV.

“We had the same concerns I think most people have when you suggest an electric vehicle,” admits Brian. “That you'll go on a long trip and you won't be able to charge your car, and you'll be stuck at the side of a motorway.”

With busy lives, jobs and children’s activities to juggle, the Drysdale’s were eager to make the switch to a car that was better suited to their lifestyles.

Brian says: “There's no two days the same in our house. Myself and my wife rotate between working remotely or working in the office. We wanted a larger vehicle because our kids are growing.”

Having seen how much EV technology has developed in recent years, the Drysdale’s were finally ready — and they haven’t looked back.

“The electric vehicle that we have now has a 500km range so it's comparable, in fact, with the diesel car that we had previously,” explains Brian.

Straightforward installation process

To achieve the flexibility and control they needed, the Drysdale’s wanted to be able to charge their electric vehicle at home in Dublin. Brian’s search for EV home charger installations brought him to Energia.

“The installation process for the EV charger was really straightforward,” he says. “We just had to purchase the installation through the Energia site. We had the installation partner come out and do a site visit, completed the installation for us within four hours and we were able to charge our car.”

And the benefits of the switch didn’t stop with a convenient installation process. To get the best deal using the new EV charger, the Drysdale’s switched to an Energia smart meter plan.

Extremely affordable EV charging

“Since moving to the smart meter plan with Energia, we've noticed a big saving on our bill,” says Brian.

Energia’s Energy Insights app has lived up to its name, giving Brian and his family the energy usage data they need to make informed, cost-effective decisions. This includes taking advantage of discounted overnight electricity rates to charge their car.

Any lingering EV questions are answered and addressed in real-time, which means the Drysdale’s can instead enjoy the convenience and savings that their car brings them.

“Having the smart meter along with the app allows us to understand week-to-week how our usage pattern changes. We make decisions based on the peak times when we're going to do certain things,” explains Brian.

“So we can set our car up, plug it in, we go to bed. We don't have to worry about it. We get up the next morning, the car’s charged. We get the best rate that we can to charge the vehicle, which makes it extremely affordable.”

It’s not only a question of cost but also one of control. With all the facts at their disposal, the family is empowered to make better decisions.

Brian reveals: “Using the app has been what's really helped us understand what our electricity usage has been, and it helps us make decisions about when and how we want to use the electricity.”

“I definitely feel more in control of our energy consumption these days. We've had nothing but a positive experience,” he adds.
