The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers a Support Scheme for Energy Audits (SSEA) which provides a €2,000 voucher towards a professional assessment. In most cases, this voucher covers the full cost of the audit.

What is an Energy Audit?

An energy audit is a structured assessment of how your business uses energy. It covers everything from your building’s fabric to specific machinery and onsite processes to see where energy is being wasted. Under the SSEA, audits are conducted by SEAI-registered auditors who meet strict criteria to participate in the scheme. 

The process follows three stages: 

Data collection and review: Your auditor looks at bills and consumption data for electricity, gas, and other fuels. Where applicable, company fleet fuel is also included.

Site visit: The auditor inspects your premises to identify any inefficiencies that the data won’t show.

Audit report: You receive a formal SSEA Report. This gives a clear picture of current performance, with improvements ranked by cost and impact.

Is my business eligible?

The SSEA is open to SMEs that spend at least €10,000 per year on electricity and heating at the facility being audited. Transport fuels are not included in this calculation. Your auditor will verify these figures using your utility bills. The premises being audited must be occupied and in active use, each business is entitled to one audit voucher only, and if you have already received an SSEA voucher you cannot apply again.

For most SMEs spending up to €50,000 annually on energy, the €2,000 voucher should cover the full audit cost. If your spend is higher, you may need to contribute to the balance. In that case, it’s worth securing quotes from at least three registered auditors before you start.

How to Apply

The application process is online. Once you select a registered auditor and confirm the cost, your voucher is issued by email. You then schedule the audit and after the audit report is completed the auditor claims the payment directly from the SEAI.
