SEPTEMBER 24 2024
The Energia All-Ireland League (AIL) is back for the eagerly awaited 2024/25 season, and excitement is building among club rugby fans nationwide.

With teams from all corners of Ireland competing across the men’s and women’s divisions, this season promises intense competition, thrilling matches, and plenty of memorable moments. Let’s dive into what each division has in store as we gear up for another campaign.

Division 1A: The Capital Charge

Defending champions Cork Constitution are aiming for back-to-back titles, a feat not achieved since Shannon’s dominance in the mid-2000s. However, their rivals are more than ready to challenge for the crown. Clontarf, Lansdowne, and Terenure are all gunning to knock them off their perch, while Ballynahinch, with two consecutive 5th-place finishes, are determined to finally break into the top four.

City of Armagh, who made their debut in Division 1A last season, will be looking to solidify their place among the elite. Meanwhile, Young Munster and Garryowen represent Limerick’s challenge, with UCD and St. Mary’s completing what promises to be a fiercely competitive and talent-filled division.

Division 1B: Wide Open Race

Division 1B is always unpredictable, and the 2024/25 season will be no different. Old Belvedere will be looking to continue their momentum from last year and aim for promotion. Meanwhile, Nenagh and Dublin University, who experienced promotion and relegation respectively last season, are teams to watch. They’ll be eager to establish themselves early on.

Both Naas and Highfield, who narrowly missed the playoffs last year, will be determined to go further this time around. Add in playoff regulars like Blackrock, Old Wesley, Queens, Shannon, and UCC, and you have a division that is truly wide open.

Division 2A: New Kids on the Block

Division 2A’s competitiveness is well known, and this season will be no different. Barnhall, who had an impressive campaign last year, will be among the promotion favourites. Newly promoted sides Instonians and Corinthians are in fine form and will be eager to make their mark in their new division.

Old Crescent will be aiming for a playoff spot, while Cashel will look to rediscover their best form. Ballymena, Banbridge, and Buccaneers will be looking to establish early-season momentum, while Greystones, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, will relish the chance to move up the league this year.

Division 2B: All to Play For

Division 2B is known for its high-scoring encounters, and 2024/25 should be no exception. Sligo and Wanderers finished strong last season and will be among the favourites to push for promotion. Newly promoted Clogher Valley will aim to continue their rise after a stellar campaign, while Dungannon and Malone know that home form will be key to their success.

Expect UL Bohemians, Rainey, Galwegians, and Malahide to be in the playoff mix, making this one of the most competitive divisions to watch.

Division 2C: Rising Stars and New Contenders

Division 2C welcomes fresh talent, with Ballyclare making their senior debut and Monkstown returning to the senior ranks after 21 years. Both will be eager to make their presence felt. Clubs like Enniscorthy, Bruff, Midleton, and Tullamore will also be looking to make a strong start and push for promotion.

Clonmel and Omagh, who impressed in the latter half of last season, will hope to build on that momentum, while Dolphin and Belfast Harlequins, both relegated last season, will be determined to fight for promotion in what promises to be an intensely competitive division.

Energia AIL Women’s Division: Momentum Key to Success

The Women’s Division will be fiercely contested, with UL Bohemians aiming to defend their title. They’ll face stiff competition from Railway Union, Blackrock, and Old Belvedere, all of whom are ready to push the champions to the limit. Last season’s final was historic, and expectations are high for continued growth and success.

Teams like Ballincollig, Wicklow, and Galwegians showed steady improvement last season and will be eager to continue their upward trajectory. Suttonians, Cooke, and newcomers Tullow will also be looking to make the most of their opportunities in a division filled with emerging talent and hungry competitors.
