Is Level Pay worth it? A brief guide for Energia customers
But is Level Pay worth it? In this short, concise guide, we explain how Level Pay works, who it suits best, and what to consider before signing up.
Understanding Level Pay and how it works
Level Pay is essentially a budget payment plan that spreads your estimated annual energy costs evenly across 12 months. Instead of paying higher bills in winter and lower bills in summer, you pay a fixed monthly amount by direct debit.
Here’s how it works:
- At Energia, we will review your previous 12 months of energy usage. If you’re a new customer, we’ll estimate your monthly payments based on details about your home, like the number of rooms and people living there.
- Your total estimated annual cost is divided into 12 equal monthly payments.
- However, you will continue to receive a regular bill every two months showing your actual energy usage and overall costs. This is for your information.
- Your account is reviewed at least once a year to ensure your monthly payment reflects your real consumption.
- If your usage changes significantly, your payment may be adjusted to keep it accurate.
This system helps protect against seasonal bill shock, especially for households with high winter heating usage.
It is equally important to keep an eye on your payments versus how much your bills are and let us know if you need to increase / decrease your monthly payments. You can, of course, choose a payment date that suits you best.
Is a Level Pay plan suitable for everyone?
It depends on your circumstances. It may be worth it if you:
- Prefer predictable monthly payments
- Want to avoid large winter bills
- Like structured household budgeting
- Use most of your energy during colder months
It may be less suitable if you:
- Closely track your usage and prefer paying for exact consumption
- Tend to significantly reduce energy use over time
- Are comfortable managing seasonal bill increases
Importantly, Level Pay does not reduce your total annual energy cost. It simply spreads it evenly. However, combining Level Pay with energy-saving measures — such as following practical home energy efficiency tips — can help reduce your overall usage and future payment reviews.
Understanding your home’s BER rating can also highlight where improvements could lower your energy costs.

FAQs: Level Pay
What does level payment mean?
A level payment means paying the same fixed amount each month, rather than paying a variable amount based on actual usage during that billing period. The total cost is spread evenly across the year.
Will I still receive a bill every other month?
Yes, you will continue to receive your regular bill once every two months. This will outline your actual energy usage, unit rates and standing charges. It is important to review your bills.
Is Level Pay available for both gas and electricity?
Energia offers Level Pay options for eligible residential electricity and gas customers who pay by Direct Debit.
Will my Level Pay payment always be the same?
Your Level Pay amount is designed to stay consistent, but it may change if your actual energy usage differs from our estimates.
If you use less energy than expected, any overpayment will be credited to your account. If you use more energy than estimated, we’ll review your account and may adjust your monthly payment. We aim to review your account at least once a year to ensure your payments remain accurate. Please keep an eye on your bills and if you find you are paying too much or too little, please call our Customer Care team who will be able to review and amend your payments for you.
Your Level Pay amount can also be affected by other factors including energy price change and connectivity of your smart meter.
